In a granny flat kitchen, the splashback covers a surprisingly small area — roughly 1.2 square metres in a standard 2.4m galley run. That small surface has a disproportionately large visual impact. It is one of the first things a tenant or buyer notices, and it is one of the easiest places to add character without blowing the fitout budget.

This guide covers every practical granny flat splashback option available in Australia in 2026 — tile, glass, wallpaper, stainless steel, and porcelain slab — with real AUD total costs sized for a standard granny flat kitchen, not vague per-metre figures. There is also a compliance note that catches most first-time builders out, and the one material you cannot legally spec in a new Australian kitchen anymore.

How Much Splashback Does a Granny Flat Kitchen Actually Need?

Most granny flat kitchens need less splashback than you think — but the material cost per m² varies dramatically. Know your area before you get quotes.

What Are the Compliance Rules for Granny Flat Splashbacks?

Splashbacks are governed by the National Construction Code — specifically the requirements around non-combustible surfaces in cooking zones. Most materials are compliant, but there are three rules worth knowing before you finalise your choice.

  • Engineered stone is banned. Splashback panels containing 1% or more crystalline silica cannot be manufactured, supplied, or installed in Australia from 1 July 2024. This includes quartz-composite products. Compliant alternatives include porcelain, sintered stone, natural stone, ceramic tile, glass, and stainless steel.
  • Wallpaper splashbacks need a non-combustible zone behind the cooktop. Wallpaper cannot be directly adjacent to an open-flame gas cooktop. A clear perspex or glass panel must sit between the wallpaper and any heat source. Induction cooktops have no open flame — perspex is still recommended for moisture protection but the heat risk is significantly lower.
  • Glass splashback cutouts must be specified before toughening. Any cutouts for power points or switches in a glass splashback must be made before the glass is toughened. You cannot cut toughened glass after the fact — get the electrical layout confirmed before ordering.
  • The splashback itself does not trigger council approval — it is part of the kitchen fitout. Council approval is for the dwelling, not individual fitout decisions. However, the overall kitchen must form part of an approved secondary dwelling.

FAQs Granny Flat Splashback Ideas

Ranked by total cost for a standard 1.2m² granny flat splashback zone: (1) Subway tile — ~$100–$156 supply and install; (2) Stainless steel — ~$144–$216; (3) Wallpaper with perspex — ~$220–$350 depending on wallpaper chosen; (4) Zellige or handmade tile — ~$168–$312; (5) Toughened glass — ~$300–$540; (6) Large format porcelain — ~$276–$504. Subway tile is the cheapest compliant option with professional installation. Wallpaper under perspex is the cheapest option for visual impact per dollar.
Yes — with the right installation method. Wallpaper used as a splashback must be protected by a clear perspex or glass panel, particularly in the zone directly behind the cooktop. This keeps the wallpaper safe from moisture, grease, and heat. For induction cooktops, which have no open flame, the perspex is primarily for moisture protection. For gas cooktops, a non-combustible barrier is essential. When installed correctly, a wallpaper splashback is a fully legitimate and surprisingly durable option.
Yes. Engineered stone products containing 1% or more crystalline silica — which includes most quartz-composite splashback panels — are banned in Australia from 1 July 2024. Imports were prohibited from 1 January 2025. The ban covers splashback panels as well as benchtops. Existing installations are safe to leave undisturbed, but no new engineered stone splashbacks can be legally manufactured, supplied, or installed. Compliant alternatives include porcelain slab, sintered stone, natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite), ceramic tile, glass, and stainless steel.
In a standard 2.4m granny flat kitchen, the splashback zone between the bench top (900mm from floor) and the base of the overhead cabinets (approximately 1,400mm from floor) is roughly 500mm high by 2,400mm wide — approximately 1.2m² total. A full-height splashback from bench to ceiling on the same run covers approximately 3.36m². Most budget builds use the standard zone only; full-height is a premium option that significantly increases the visual impact and the material cost.
